Trends and Opportunities

UI has selected an Energy Service Company in order to implement a Performance Contract to save energy and water.

Some energy costs are expected to continue upward, it is important to make strategic plans now to install energy efficient equipment for new building projects as well as gradual replacement of worn-out, inefficient equipment.  New energy-efficient equipment also will allow tighter temperature control, with multiple setback capabilities and monitoring.

UI's Construction Standards should be updated to incorporate more energy-saving features in new buildings and for major renovations. The university's long-term operational costs will be lower if projects incorporate more energy-saving equipment, lights, HVAC, automated system management features and standards for such.

More thorough and aggressive maintenance and repair of building systems and campus-wide utility distribution systems.  This includes adding insulation, maintaining steam traps and system valves, locating and repairing leaks, updating the local and global controls systems for greater operational efficiency, and working down the deferred maintenance backlog on these systems.

 FundingPossibilities
Many of the above goals come with costs.  Keeping options affordable is but one aspect.  Seeking new monies for innovations also is imperative.
