ASUI-KIBBIE ACTIVITY CENTER: Life Safety Construction Work
As part of work being undertaken during the spring and summer 2009 to address life safety issues in the 33-year-old Kibbie Dome, you will see the west wall of the facility being replaced with translucent panels that will be part of a non-combustible construction assembly for that wall. Truly, this will shine a new light on Vandal activities in the Dome.
Concurrent with the end-wall replacement, a range of interior life safety work will take place including: west end exiting in the new wall; adding handrails in the seating aisles; providing for some of the required smoke exhaust systems; and making other life safety and code mitigation improvements. The University’s Board of Regents approved, and the University secured, a $10 million finance package to fund this initial phase of life safety work. The availability of additional funding will guide the timing and scope of additional phases of life safety work.
The main ways that the construction project may impact the campus community are access to the Kibbie Dome and parking are the Dome.
Safety is the primary concern during the course of this project; safety of University community members who work in and use the Dome, and members of the general public who may use the facility.
- To reduce exposure to any airborne particulate matter that could be released during demolition and construction, it will be necessary to close the Dome during key points during the project.
- The entire Dome will be closed to facility users from Monday, March 30, through Friday, May 15.
This closure notice includes the Dome floor, bleachers and all concourse areas. The Dome will be reopened for commencement on Saturday, May 16.
- At this time we intend to keep the racquetball areas available for recreational use. Please note that if this area is not able to be kept free of construction-related particulate matter, then it will be closed.
- The University’s Memorial Gym will continue to operate its normal hours and offer its regular schedule of activities and services.
- Construction materials and equipment are vital parts of this project and they will be staged in the parking lots in and around the Kibbie Dome. Lot 51 will be closed. Lot 57 will be partially open. Please remember that access roads and areas in and around the Kibbie Dome will part of an active construction site and non-construction access can change without notice.
We recognize this project may cause some inconvenience for some in the University and Moscow communities who use the Dome facilities; and we ask you to “pardon our dust”! This is a very dynamic project that is operating within a very tight scheduling window. We have worked closely with Walsh Construction, which is overseeing the project, to ensure that major construction on the wall replacement is completed by September 1, 2009 in time for the first football game.
This is a long-awaited step in the transformation of our most iconic structure on campus. Your interest and patience in the project are appreciated.
